Jamaica Hospital Opens New Mothers Nursing Room for Breastfeeding Mothers

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center encourages and supports a Mothers decision to breastfeed. Our newest example of this is the opening of our Mothers Nursing Room for community residents, hospital visitors and employees who are nursing mothers.

On June 1, 2016 Mr. Bruce Flanz alongside Lactation Consultant Paula Utilla and Marge Lilienthal, Director of Nursing for Women and Children's Services, cut the ribbon on Jamaica Hospital's Mothers Nursing Room. This new, two-station room allows women more privacy to feed their babies in a clean and spacious environment. This room is located on the ground floor of the main hospital. It has two areas separated by privacy curtains and comfortable chairs and a sink for hand hygiene. A changing table is provided as well as educational materials for successful breastfeeding.

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is currently offering a breastfeeding education program. This program is available in English and Spanish every Monday between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. This program is given at the Women's Health Center located at 133-03 Jamaica Avenue. Classes are taught by one of our certified midwives and are intended to familiarize mothers to be with proper breastfeeding techniques.

Breastfeeding provides many benefits for both mother and infant. Breast milk provides nourishment and protection to the baby. The antibodies in breast milk help protect baby from the cold and flu and boosts their ability to fight off more serious illnesses such as certain cancers like leukemia and Hodgkin's disease. Breast milk lowers the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends breastfeeding for as long as possible to reduce the risk of SIDS. The benefits to women include lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

It is the Hospital's policy that any employee or member of the community who needs to express breast milk or breastfeed their infant will have access to this room. The Mothers Nursing Room is accessible 24 hours a day. For entry, keys will be kept with the Admitting Representative at the front desk. Users will be expected to sign in and out of the Log Book.

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center continues to make enhancements that provide quality care to the community. For more information on the Mothers Nursing room or to schedule a breastfeeding education session please call our Lactation Consultant at 718-206-6808 or 718-291-3276.
