{"id":3143,"date":"2017-07-21T16:06:09","date_gmt":"2017-07-21T16:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/?p=3143"},"modified":"2017-07-21T16:55:01","modified_gmt":"2017-07-21T16:55:01","slug":"jamaica-hospital-earns-internationally-recognized-baby-friendly-designation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/jamaica-hospital-earns-internationally-recognized-baby-friendly-designation\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamaica Hospital Earns Internationally Recognized Baby-Friendly Designation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb_share_1\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a name=\"fb_share\" type=\"box_count\" share_url=\"https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/jamaica-hospital-earns-internationally-recognized-baby-friendly-designation\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php\">Share<\/a><\/div><div><script src=\"http:\/\/static.ak.fbcdn.net\/connect.php\/js\/FB.Share\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/div><p>Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is pleased to announce that it has been officially awarded Baby-Friendly USA\u00ae designation.<\/p>\n<p>Baby- Friendly\u00ae designation is a globally known and prestigious recognition awarded to hospitals and birthing facilities that uphold strict breastfeeding and maternal care guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3151\" src=\"http:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/baby-friendly-v3.jpg\" alt=\"baby friendly hospital queens \" width=\"867\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/baby-friendly-v3.jpg 867w, https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/baby-friendly-v3-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/baby-friendly-v3-768x294.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/baby-friendly-v3-500x191.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\" \/>The process of becoming a Baby-Friendly\u00ae institution is rigorous and the designation is only awarded to organizations that demonstrate a full commitment to providing the best possible support for breastfeeding mothers and ensuring a high quality of mother\/baby care.<\/p>\n<p>As a Baby- Friendly\u00ae facility, Jamaica Hospital, which delivered over 2,200 babies in 2016, joins an elite group of healthcare providers in New York State that has earned this recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital now ranks as part of the 21% of healthcare facilities in the nation to boast Baby-Friendly USA\u00ae designation. \u201cThis achievement is a reflection of our dedication to providing our community with quality care,\u201d states Dr. Steven Inglis, Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this monumental accomplishment, Jamaica Hospital collaborated with other health agencies including the New York City Breastfeeding Hospital Collaborative(NYC BHC) to implement initiatives aimed at improving exclusive breastfeeding rates and promoting mother-infant bonding practices. \u00a0\u201cBy encouraging breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth, we are addressing health problems that may develop during infancy but can also affect a person\u2019s health later in life\u201d shares Paula Utilla, Lactation Consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence shows that babies who are fed breast milk exclusively are less likely to develop respiratory diseases such as asthma or gastrointestinal diseases.\u00a0 Breastfeeding is also beneficial for a mother&#8217;s health as women who breastfeed are less likely to develop cardiovascular disease, breast or ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Jamaica Hospital provides the community with several medical, social and educational services all created to offer women support during and after pregnancy; some of these services include breastfeeding education and support programs, childbirth classes, and a highly successful Centering\u00ae program. \u00a0\u00a0Last year, \u00a0the hospital opened a Mother\u2019s Nursing Room, designed to offer members of the community, hospital visitors and employees who are nursing a clean and comfortable place to feed their babies or express milk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made great strides and will continue to work diligently to create services and programs that will improve the overall health and wellness of our community, \u201cstates Marge Lilienthal, Director of Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ShareJamaica Hospital Medical Center is pleased to announce that it has been officially awarded Baby-Friendly USA\u00ae designation.
