{"id":4171,"date":"2019-02-12T17:47:05","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T17:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/?p=4171"},"modified":"2019-02-21T20:49:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T20:49:06","slug":"jamaica-hospital-first-in-queens-to-join-healingnycs-relay-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/jamaica-hospital-first-in-queens-to-join-healingnycs-relay-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamaica Hospital First In Queens To Join HealingNYC\u2019s Relay Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb_share_1\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><a name=\"fb_share\" type=\"box_count\" share_url=\"https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/jamaica-hospital-first-in-queens-to-join-healingnycs-relay-program\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php\">Share<\/a><\/div><div><script src=\"http:\/\/static.ak.fbcdn.net\/connect.php\/js\/FB.Share\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4172 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/doctor-with-patient-530477483-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"220\" \/>The opioid epidemic continues to plague New York City communities.\u00a0 According to the City\u2019s Department of Health, there were 694 confirmed overdose deaths from January to June 2018, and a fatal drug overdose reported every six hours.<\/p>\n<p>More New Yorkers die as a result of a drug overdose than homicides, suicides and motor vehicle accidents combined.<\/p>\n<p>Jamaica Hospital Medical Center which operates one of the City\u2019s busiest emergency departments has experienced firsthand the detriment the epidemic has caused.\u00a0 Last year, the hospital\u2019s emergency department treated over 200 patients for opioid drug overdoses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years, we have seen the numbers continue to increase significantly. This epidemic has profoundly affected many individuals and families. Opioid addiction has impacted all genders, ages, ethnicities and those of all socioeconomic backgrounds,\u201d explained Dr. Geoffrey Doughlin, Chairman of Emergency Medicine.\u00a0 \u201cNo group is untouched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Jamaica Hospital our goal is to improve the health of our community in all aspects. We are committed to doing all that we can to combat the opioid crisis,\u201d shared Dr. Shi-Wen Lee, Vice Chairman of Emergency Medicine.\u00a0 In addition to providing life-saving treatments in the emergency department, the hospital is the first in Queens to participate in New York City\u2019s Relay program.<\/p>\n<p>The Relay program, which launched in 2017 under HealingNYC, targets survivors of opioid overdoses who are at high risk for a future, fatal overdose.\u00a0 According to New York City\u2019s Department of Health, \u201cIn the hours after someone survives an opioid overdose, a trained Relay \u201cWellness Advocate\u201d meets with the survivor in the hospital emergency department to offer overdose risk reduction counseling, overdose rescue training, and an overdose prevention kit containing naloxone. Participating hospitals can contact Relay at any hour of the day or night, on every day of the year, and a Wellness Advocate aims to arrive within the hour. Wellness Advocates stay in contact with overdose survivors for up to 90 days and connect them to appropriate services\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJamaica Hospital is proud to work in collaboration with Relay. We have made over 50 patient referrals since the program\u2019s inception at\u00a0our facility in August 2018,\u201d said Joshua Sclair, Emergency Medicine Administrator.\u00a0 The hospital\u2019s participation in the initiative offers the community resources that can potentially reduce the number of overdose deaths and provide access to supportive services.<\/p>\n<p>Any person in need of treatment for their addiction can come to the emergency department at Jamaica Hospital and receive help.
