margin-left: 10px;\"><a name=\"fb_share\" type=\"box_count\" share_url=\"https:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/jamaica-hospital-receives-hanys-community-benefit-spotlight\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php\">Share<\/a><\/div><div><script src=\"http:\/\/static.ak.fbcdn.net\/connect.php\/js\/FB.Share\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4202 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/medisyshealth.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/seniors-168588392-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"216\" \/>A recent article published in the New York Times reported that one of the most frequent causes of death among older adults is complications from a fall.\u00a0 The article revealed that &#8220;Every 19 minutes in this country an older person dies from a fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a local level, data collected by Jamaica Hospital Medical Center\u2019s Emergency Department supported these findings.\u00a0 It was found that of the hospital\u2019s 770 fall-related trauma cases recorded between January and November 2018; senior citizens accounted for 68% of incidents.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to address this critical issue, Jamaica Hospital\u2019s Trauma Division launched a series of Fall Prevention Workshops in surrounding communities with the highest concentration of falls.<\/p>\n<p>The workshops were held at senior centers and covered a wide range of topics from identifying fall risk factors to home safety strategies.\u00a0 \u00a0By utilizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <em>Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries\u00a0<\/em>falls risk self-assessment survey, Jamaica Hospital was able to identify seniors that were at a moderate to high risk of falling and make recommendations.\u00a0 Program participants were also encouraged to speak with their physicians about better managing their risk of falling.<\/p>\n<p>Jamaica Hospital\u2019s Fall Prevention Workshops were well received by the community. \u00a0In total, \u00a0over 20 senior centers and 700 older adults participated in the program.\u00a0 The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) highlighted the program as part of its Community Benefit Spotlight.\u00a0\u00a0 The hospital was recognized for facilitating this much-needed initiative and fostering a relationship with the community that will greatly benefit its senior population.<\/p>\n<p>Click here to read more about HANYS\u2019 Community Benefit Spotlight.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hanys.org\/community_benefit\/?a=vs&amp;s=Jamaica_Hospital_Medical_Center_prevents_falls\">https:\/\/www.hanys.org\/community_benefit\/?a=vs&amp;s=Jamaica_Hospital_Medical_Center_prevents_falls<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ShareA recent article published in the New York Times reported that one of the most frequent causes of death among older adults is complications from a fall.\u00a0 The article revealed that &#8220;Every 19 minutes in this country an older person &hellip;
