The MediSys Health Network of Jamaica Hospital and Flushing Hospital Medical Centers recently held its Fifth Annual Research Conference and Poster Competition.
The posters submitted are divided into three categories: Case Reports, Empirical Research, and Quality Improvements. They are then graded on a rubric of five areas: format, visual, content 1: Background: was sufficient background information, such as references, provided; content 2: Aims: were the aims clearly stated, and were they achieved, and impact.
The first-place winning posters in Case Reports were “Rapid Respiratory Failure in Advanced Anti-SRP Immune-Mediated Necrotizing Myopathy Following Two-Year Loss to Follow-Up: A Case Report” by T. McLean, R. Alptekin, N. Garg (JHMC) and “Portal Venous Gas and Pneumatosis Intestinalis Lupus: When Disaster Imaging Hides a Viable Bowel” by M. Hassanesfahani, CMPT. Quang, and D. Shah (FHMC).
Second-place winning posters of the category included “Chikungunya Virus Induced Secondary Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome Leading to Refractory Shock and Multi-Organ Failure: A Case Report” by T. Ahmed, M. Fidelis Ndumbe Mbome, T. Mustaque, F. Nitol (JHMC), and “Congenital Inferior Vena Cava Agenesis and Atresia: Divergent Clinical Courses and Management Implications in Two Young Patients” by C. Kilada, J. Friedman, M. Guerges (FHMC).
And finally, the third-place posters were “Adult-Onset Henoch Schönlein Purpura (IGA Vasculitis) with Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis and Negative Direct Immunofluorescence” by S. Khadiza, H. Fadi, and S. Nayer-Nouri (JHMC), and “Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections of the Neck in a Local Community Hospital: A Case Series Review of Clinical Characteristics, Surgical Management, and Outcomes” by C. Kilada, J. Lopez, N. Thomas, R. Chouake, M. Louis, and “Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-Induced Hypophysitis Presenting as Refractory Hyponatremia & Hypoglycemia with Normal MRI” by M. Sayyar, A. Shahzadi, S. Khalid, H. Alomari, M. Algohary (FHMC).
In the Empirical Research Category, the posters that were awarded first place were “Utility of Standardized Not Templates for Improving Quality of Documentation and Communication in a Psychiatric Residency Training Program” by A. Damianides, N. Bandekar, O. Fultz, A. Russo, J. Centrone, A. Kaur, T. Patel, P. Jain (JHMC), and “Surgical Outcomes Between Laparoscopic and Open Resection of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (Gists) at a Single Community Hospital” by M. Alla, N. Banko, CMPT. Quang, M.A. Louis, N. Mandava (FHMC).
Second-place winning posters were “Dental Home Establishment Following Comprehensive Dental Treatment Under General Anesthesia (GA): An Eight-Year Follow-Up” by S. Lee, J. Weiss, M. Roland (JHMC), and “Meta-Analysis of Small Bowel Obstruction Due to Intraluminal Bleeding Following Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass in Bariatric Surgery: Incidence, Risk Factors, Management, and Outcomes” by M. Hassanesfahani, M. Alla, A. Choi, N. Khan, D. Shah (FHMC).
Lastly, the third-place winning posters of the category were “Poverty Level Moderates the Association of Daily Negative Mood and Negative Interpersonal Interactions on Nocturnal Blood Pressure” L. Peters, J. Gergyes, G. Hooks, M. Taub, S. Jawhar, M. Naseem, C. Neinaber, A. Roth, E. Brondolo (JHMC), and “Nutrition Label Literacy and Body Mass Index Among Adolescents in an Urban Community Hospital” by A. Glowacki, A. Santos, L. Bloomfield, T. Han, L.Q. Lew and “Effect of Body Mass Index on Electrocardiogram in Children Aged 2-7 Years with Still’s Murmur in a Multiethnic Community Hospital” by Y. Elhashash, A. Rahman, S.A. Shaikh, M. Roland, and L.Q. Lew (FHMC).
In the final category Quality Improvements, the first-place winning posters were, “Improving the Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Mental Health Concerns Among OBGYN Patients in a Large, Urban Safety-Net Health System” by J.K. Ascencio, A. Cebelinski, C. Awad, F. Benoit, N.D. Attoh-Okine (JHMC), and “Reduction of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) Through a Multidisciplinary Quality Improvement Approach in a Community Teaching Hospital” by A.A. Khan, J. Second-place winning posters of the category included “Reducing Discharges Against Medical Advice in a Hospital-Based Chemical Dependency Unit: A Quality Improvement Project” by G. Mir, M. Elmahdy, A. Miele, J. Centrone, A. Kaur, B. Joseph (JHMC) and “Timing of Antenatal Corticosteroid Administration in Patients at Risk of Preterm Birth in an Urban Community Center,” A. Cai, L. Woo, M. Roland, A. Russo, I. Chauhan.

The MediSys Health Network of Jamaica Hospital and Flushing Hospital Medical Centers recently held its Third Annual Research Conference and Poster Competition. Sponsored by the Department of Research Education and Innovation and the Department of Clinical Research, the event allows the entire MediSys hospital community to present any scholarly activity they had done over the past academic year of 2023-2024.

On Friday, May 24th, over 30 research posters and additional published works were displayed in print and electronic forms in Jamaica Hospital’s auditoriums. The following week, on Thursday, May 30th, Flushing Hospital showcased nearly three dozen posters on the walls of the auditorium. All of the posters on display were presented at professional conferences within the last year.
Many passed through and admired the posters at both events, which included submissions from various departments including family and internal medicine, ob/gyn, orthopedics, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, pulmonology, surgery, and trauma.
